"There has been a connection between the Parish of Bedford, Leigh since 25th August 1865 when a Faculty was granted to build a new School on the land attached and belonging to the Parish of St Thomas, Bedford, Leigh. It has been a link that successive buildings of both the School and Church have nurtured and developed for over 150 years, with Clergy and Church Officers playing an active part as Governors and Visitors for generations of Children and Teaching Staff.
Across the School Terms and the Church's Liturgical year there are numerous occasions when the School, either by Class, in part, or its entirety have held Lessons, Services or given Presentations in the Church; from Harvest, Christmas, Lent and Easter, as well as the Leaver's Service. The Annual Confirmation Service is always a joy when many Children are prepared for an important step in their life as Christians. But there are also the Communion Services when the Upper Years contribute to the Parish Mass alongside our Parishioners.
There is also a set programme when the Parish Priest takes Assemblies or celebrates a School Mass in the Halls.
The spiritual and pastoral link between the Church and School is an important one to respect, develop and act as a support and encouragement during every pupils' maturity at St Thomas CE Primary School. Our intention is always to present a traditional approach to worship and a contemporary spirituality that forms part of every pupils learning pattern and prepares them for a positive view towards a mature Christian Faith. Alongside this, the Church is also seen as a resource for the Teaching and Ancillary Staff to utilise and explore when appropriate, as well as be assured of our commitment to support them.
Please pray for our School with this prayer which is said at the beginning of all Governors Meetings;
God, our Father, we offer this prayer for all schools, colleges and places of learning but especially St Thomas Primary School.
We pray for those who teach, that they may be endowed with the same love and understanding we see revealed in the life and teaching of Jesus Christ.
We pray for the ancillary staff who work here and minister to the children through their skills, may they be constantly renewed in their commitment to serve both children and staff in their duties.
We pray for the children that they may be guided in the way that leads to the beauty of life which Christ brings to us all.
May both Staff and Children accept with gratitude and humility your divine gifts of opportunity that comes from learning your ways.
May the Spirit of truth inspire them all to use their studies and learning to understand God’s purpose for all people to live in the beauty of harmony, made known through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen"
